Gronback illuminates both the principles and techniques software professionals need to master, offering insights that will be invaluable to developers working with any tool or platform.

As coleader of the Eclipse Modeling Project, Gronback is singularly well-positioned to demonstrate DSLs and MDD at work in Eclipse. Fundamentals Of Cryptology: A Professional Reference and Interactive Tutorial

Fundamentals Of Cryptology: A Professional Reference and Interactive Tutorial
Author : Henk C.A. van Tilborg
Publisher: Springer
Date : 1999
Language : English
Format : PDF
Pages : 508
ISBN-10 : 0792386752
ISBN-13 : 978-0792386759
Size : 2.52 MB

Description:
The protection of sensitive information against unauthorized access or fraudulent changes has been of prime concern throughout the centuries. Modern communication techniques, using computers connected through networks, make all data even more vulnerable for these threats. Also, new issues have come up that were not relevant before, e.g. how to add a (digital) signature to an electronic document in such a way that the signer can not deny later on that the document was signed by him/her.

Cryptology addresses the above issues. It is at the foundation of all information security. The techniques employed to this end have become increasingly mathematical of nature. This book serves as an introduction to modern cryptographic methods. After a brief survey of classical cryptosystems, it concentrates on three main areas. First of all, stream ciphers and block ciphers are discussed. These systems have extremely fast implementations, but sender and receiver have to share a secret key. Public key cryptosystems (the second main area) make it possible to protect data without a prearranged key. Their security is based on intractable mathematical problems, like the factorization of large numbers. The remaining chapters cover a variety of topics, such as zero-knowledge proofs, secret sharing schemes and authentication codes. Two appendices explain all mathematical prerequisites in great detail. One is on elementary number theory (Euclid's Algorithm, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, quadratic residues, inversion formulas, and continued fractions). The other appendix gives a thorough introduction to finite fields and their algebraic structure.

Description:
This coursebook explores the different aspects of open technologies that are at the foundations of modern computer networks. The Internet is built on top of open protocols and open standards.

"Open" in this context means the opposite of "private". Private networks are those which belong to companies or institutions who impose restrictions on users who join them. Open networks do not belong to anybody because the devices they use are made available by the members of the community.

Communities are enabled by open network design and innovation emerges. That is the foundation of P2P production and distribution models, IP telephony and multimedia streaming technologies.

War and Peace

War and Peace | Feedbooks (1869) | PDF | English | 1578 Pages | 5.35 MB

War and Peace is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, first published from 1865 to 1869 in Russkii Vestnik, which tells the story of Russian society during the Napoleonic Era. It is usually described as one of Tolstoy's two major masterpieces (the other being Anna Karenina) as well as one of the world's greatest novels. War and Peace offered a new kind of fiction, with a great many characters caught up in a plot that covered nothing less than the grand subjects indicated by the title, combined with the equally large topics of youth, marriage, age, and death. Though it is often called a novel today, it broke so many conventions of the form that it was not considered a novel in its time. Indeed, Tolstoy himself considered Anna Karenina (1878) to be his first attempt at a novel in the European sense.

Description:
The best-selling Fundamentals of Corporate Finance (FCF) is written with one strongly held principle? that corporate finance should be developed and taught in terms of a few integrated, powerful ideas. As such, there are three basic themes that are the central focus of the book:

1) An emphasis on intuition?underlying ideas are discussed in general terms and then by way of examples that illustrate in more concrete terms how a financial manager might proceed in a given situation.

2) A unified valuation approach?net present value (NPV) is treated as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. Every subject covered is firmly rooted in valuation, and care is taken to explain how particular decisions have valuation effects.

3) A managerial focus?the authors emphasize the role of the financial manager as decision maker, and they stress the need for managerial input and judgment.

The Interpretation Of Dreams, 3rd Edition

The Interpretation Of Dreams, 3rd Edition
Author : Sigmund Freud
Publisher: CreateSpace
Date : 2008
Format : PDF
Pages : 328
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 1440455317
ISBN-13 : 978-1440455315
Size : 924 KB

Description:
Whether we love or hate Sigmund Freud, we all have to admit that he revolutionised the way we think about ourselves. Much of this revolution can be traced to The Interpretation of Dreams, the turn-of-the-century tour de force that outlined his theory of unconscious forces in the context of dream analysis. Introducing the id, the superego, and their problem child, the ego, Freud advanced scientific understanding of the mind immeasurably by exposing motivations normally invisible to our consciousness. While there's no question that his own biases and neuroses influenced his observations, the details are less important than the paradigm shift as a whole. After Freud, our interior lives became richer and vastly more mysterious.

These mysteries clearly bothered him--he went to great (often absurd) lengths to explain dream imagery interms of childhood sexual trauma, a component of his theory jettisoned mid-century, though now popular among recovered-memory therapists. His dispassionate analyses of his own dreams are excellent studies for cognitive scientists wishing to learn how to sacrifice their vanities for the cause of learning. Freud said of the work contained in The Interpretation of Dreams, "Insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime." One would have to feel quite fortunate to shake the world even once.

Language : English
ISBN-10 : 143545751X
ISBN-13 : 978-1435457515
Size : 1.02 MB

Description:
Most SQL texts attempt to serve as an encyclopedic reference on SQL syntax -- an approach that is counterproductive, since this information is readily available in online references published by the major database vendors. For SQL beginners, it's more important for a book to focus on general concepts and offer clear explanations and examples of what the various statements can accomplish. This is that beginner book. A number of features make The LANGUAGE OF SQL unique among introductory SQL books. First, you will not be required to download software or sit with a computer as you read the text. The intent of this book is to provide examples of SQL usage that can be understood simply by reading them. Second, topics are organized in an intuitive and logical sequence. SQL keywords are introduced one at a time, allowing you to build on your prior understanding as you encounter new words and concepts. Finally, this book covers the syntax of three widely used databases: Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle, with special "Database Differences" boxes that will show you any differences in the syntax among those three databases, as well as instructions on how to obtain and install free versions of the databases. This is the only book you'll need to gain a working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.

Although there has been considerable scientific research done in this area during the last 50 years, the results of that research have not been adequately disseminated. Meeting the need for an authoritative, evidence-based reference, Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies is the first book to analyze and synthesize current research supporting Ayurvedic medicine. This book reviews the latest scientific information, evaluates the research data, and presents it in an easy to use format. The editor has carefully selected topics based on the availability of scientific studies and the prevalence of a disease. With contributions from experts in their respective fields, topics include Ayurvedic disease management, panchkarma, Ayurvedic bhasmas, the current status of Ayurveda in India, clinical research design, and evaluation of typical clinical trials of certain diseases, to name just a few. While there are many books devoted to Ayurveda, very few have any in-depth basis in scientific studies. This book provides a critical evaluation of literature, clinical trials, and biochemical and pharmacological studies on major Ayurvedic therapies that demonstrates how they are supported by scientific data. Providing a natural bridge from Ayurveda to Western medicine, Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies facilitates the integration of these therapies by health care providers.

Description:
Offering clear and reliable guidance to the ideas of philosophers from antiquity to the present day and to the major philosophical systems around the globe, he Oxford Companion to Philosophy is the definitive philosophical reference work for readers at all levels. For ten years the original volume has served as a stimulating introduction for general readers and as an indispensable guide for students and scholars. A distinguished international assembly of 249 philosophers contributed almost 2,000 entries, and many of these have now been considerably revised and updated in this major new edition; to these are added over 300 brand-new pieces on a fascinating range of current topics such as animal consciousness, cloning, corporate responsibility, the family, globalization, terrorism . Here is, indeed, a world of thought, with entries on idealism and empiricism, epicurean ism and stoicism, passion and emotion, deism and pantheism. The contributors represent a veritable who's who of modern philosophy, including such eminent figures as Isaiah Berlin, Sissela Bok, Ronald Dworkin, John Searle, Michael Walzer, and W. V. Quine. We meet the great thinkers--from Aristotle and Plato, to Augustine and Aquinas, to Descartes and Kant, to Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, right up to contemporary thinkers such as Richard Rorty, Jacques Derrida, Luce Iragaray, and Noam Chomsky. There are short entries on key concepts such as personal identity and the mind-body problem, major doctrines from utilitarianism to Marxism, schools of thought such as the Heidelberg School or the Vienna Circle, and contentious public issues such as abortion, capital punishment, and welfare. In addition, the book offers short explanations of philosophical terms (qualia, supervention, iff), puzzles (the Achilles paradox, the prisoner's dilemma), and curiosities (the philosopher's stone, slime). Almost every entry is accompanied by suggestions for further reading, and the book includes both a chronological chart of the history of philosophy and a gallery of portraits of eighty eminent philosophers. An indispensable guide and a constant source of stimulation and enlightenment, The Oxford Companion to Philosophy will appeal to everyone interested in abstract thought, the eternal questions, and the foundations of human understanding.

Weapons & Warfare

Weapons & Warfare
Author(s): John Powell
Publisher: Salem Press
Date : 2010
Pages : 1260
Format : PDF
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 1587655942
ISBN-13 : 978-1587655944
Size : 20.60 MB

Description:
This work features 140 chronologically arranged overviews of the history of weaponry and military tactics from ancient times to the present global age. Originally published in 2002, "Weapons and Warfare" is designed to meet the needs of students seeking information about weaponry, tactics, and models of warfare from ancient times to the present, worldwide. Written with the needs of students and general readers in mind, the articles contained in this set present clear discussions of the topics, explaining any terms or references that may be unclear.

The focus on the technical and strategic development of weapons and tactics, more than on a narrative chronological history of events, allows students of history, political science, science and technology alike to gain a broad understanding of the technological and strategic advances made over time and geography. The new third volume adds the essential dimension of placing these topics in broad social, cultural, and ethical contexts.

Approximately 140 topics arranged chronologically and thematically, with volume 1, "Ancient and Medieval", covering weapons and strategies from ancient times to 1500; volume 2, "The Modern Era", covering weapons and strategies from approximately 1500 to the present; and, volume 3, "Warfare: Cultural and Concepts" providing valuable overviews of the way warfare, weapons, and military history have been expressed socially, politically, and in the arts. Each essay ranges from 1,500 words to 7,000 words. The first two volumes open with overviews of major weapons groups (for example, in volume 1 'Clubs, Maces, and Slings', 'Sieges and Siegecraft'; in volume 2, 'Swords, Daggers, and Bayonets', 'Rockets, Missiles, and Nuclear Weapons'), followed by chronologically arranged sections covering major historical periods and regions of the world and their contributions to military weapons, technologies, and strategies. Volume three touches on all sociocultural and political aspects of culture, society, science, ethics, and basic 'behind the battlefield' theories, strategies, and policies. The essays in this set are organized into three essay types: Weapons overview articles are organized with sections on 'Nature and Use' and 'Development' of each weapons type. The geographically arranged warfare articles feature sections on 'Political Considerations' where relevant, and on 'Military Achievement', 'Weapons, Uniforms, and Armor', 'Military Organization', 'Doctrine, Strategy, and Tactics'. Warfare articles also feature a section on the primary sources from which historians base their observations and evaluates the best sources for understanding the warfare of the period. Culture/concept overviews (new) approach warfare and weaponry from several different perspectives: sociological, geographical, cultural, ritual, political, ethical, religious, tactical, and strategic.

Twilight (Books 1-4, Full Series)

Twilight (Books 1-4, Full Series)
Author(s): Stephenie Meyer
Publisher: Brown Young Readers
Pages : 2560
Format : PDF
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 0316160172
Size : 4.33 MB

Description:

Book 1 - Twilight:
Bella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Bella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Bella, the person Edward holds most dear.

Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

Book 2 - New Moon:
Grade 9 Up–Recovered from the vampire attack that hospitalized her in the conclusion of Twilight (Little, Brown, 2005), Bella celebrates her birthday with her boyfriend Edward and his family, a unique clan of vampires that has sworn off human blood. But the celebration abruptly ends when the teen accidentally cuts her arm on broken glass. The sight and smell of her blood trickling away forces the Cullen family to retreat lest they be tempted to make a meal of her. After all is mended, Edward, realizing the danger that he and his family create for Bella, sees no option for her safety but to leave. Mourning his departure, she slips into a downward spiral of depression that penetrates and lingers over her every step. Vampire fans will appreciate the subsequently dour mood that permeates the novel, and it's not until Bella befriends Jacob, a sophomore from her school with a penchant for motorcycles, that both the pace and her disposition begin to take off. Their adventures are wild, dare-devilish, and teeter on the brink of romance, but memories of Edward pervade Bella's emotions, and soon their fun quickly morphs into danger, especially when she uncovers the true identities of Jacob and his pack of friends. Less streamlined than Twilight yet just as exciting, New Moon will more than feed the bloodthirsty hankerings of fans of the first volume and leave them breathless for the third.

Book 3 - Eclipse:
Readers captivated by Twilight and New Moon will eagerly devour Eclipse, the much anticipated third book in Stephenie Meyer's riveting vampire love saga. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob --- knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?

Book 4 -Breaking Dawn:
Great love stories thrive on sacrifice. Throughout The Twilight Saga (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse), Stephenie Meyer has emulated great love stories--Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights--with the fated, yet perpetually doomed love of Bella (the human girl) and Edward (the vampire who feeds on animals instead of humans). In Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final installment in the series, Bella’s story plays out in some unexpected ways. The ongoing conflicts that made this series so compelling--a human girl in love with a vampire, a werewolf in love with a human girl, the generations-long feud between werewolves and vampires--resolve pretty quickly, apparently so that Meyer could focus on Bella’s latest opportunity for self-sacrifice: giving her life for someone she loves even more than Edward. How close she comes to actually making that sacrifice is questionable, which is a big shift from the earlier books. Even though you knew Bella would make it through somehow, the threats to her life, and to her relationship with Edward, had previously always felt real. It’s as if Meyer was afraid of hurting her characters too much, which is unfortunate, because the pain Bella suffered at losing Edward in New Moon, and the pain Jacob suffered at losing Bella again and again, are the fire and the heart that drive the whole series. Diehard fans will stick with Bella, Edward, and Jacob for as many twists and turns as possible, but after most of the characters get what they want with little sacrifice, some readers may have a harder time caring what happens next.

The Secret of the Great Pyramid

The Secret of the Great Pyramid

Publisher: Smithsonian
Date : 2008
Pages : 255
Format : PDF
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 0061655538
Size : 13.03 MB

Description:
Nine years ago, French architect Jean-Pierre Houdin became obsessed by the centuries-old mystery of how the Great Pyramid was built. For ten hours a day, he labored at his computer to create exquisitely detailed 3-D models of the interior of the Great Pyramid. After five years of effort, the images rotating on his computer screen provided evidence of an astonishing secret. Corkscrewing up the inside of the Great Pyramid is a mile-long ramp, unseen for 4,500 years. The pyramid was built from the inside. This revelation casts a fresh light on the minds that conceived one of the wonders of the ancient world.

A specialist on Egyptian mummies, Brier relates that he receives many a missive purporting to have solved the mystery of the Great Pyramid’s construction. In one day’s e-mail, a plausible idea caught his fancy. Unlike theories that aliens lent Egyptians a helping hand, this message dwelt on the central engineering problem concerning the type of ramp the tomb’s architect used. Brier’s communication came from coauthor Houdin, a French architect who devoted years to studying the problem. Rather than immediately bowl readers over with Houdin’s proposal, Brier cleverly entices them by alternating Houdin’s quest with the trial-and-error development of pharaonic pyramids. Photos and computer-generated graphics illustrate the authors’ explanation of designs and building processes, in the course of which they describe defects in the theories that the ramp was a mile-long straightaway or an external corkscrew. Houdin adopted an inspiration of his father’s, that the ramp was indeed a corkscrew, but one that rested inside the pyramid. His search for supporting evidence, culminating in a public presentation of his theory in 2007, fills out a book to fascinate pyramid fans.

Beyond Star Trek: Physics from Alien Invasions to the End of Time

Beyond Star Trek: Physics from Alien Invasions to the End of Time
Author(s): Lawrence M. Krauss
Publisher: Basic Books
Pages : 190
Format : PDF
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 046500637X
Size : 679 KB

Description:
Lawrence M. Krauss's publishing record reveals his knowledge of dark matter, cosmic strings, baryon number violations at the electroweak scale -- and the mysterious, sometimes bogus TV "science" that the Star Trek generation cut its teeth on. Krauss's previous book, The Physics of Star Trek, was readable, educational, and clever, never talking down to the layman or trivializing physics.
In this equally amusing companion volume, Krauss analyzes more science in Star Trek and the next generation of sci-fi movies and TV shows. Can telekinesis exist? How about ESP? Like Fox Mulder of The X-Files, we want to believe, and Krauss finesses these issues, allowing, after much discussion of gravity and electromagnetic forces, that "there is little doubt that undiscovered forces...exist at some level." He's a bit harder on the alien spacecraft of the movie Independence Day, arguing that objects so large inside our atmosphere would exert a downward pressure of 450 pounds per square inch, and that the saucers could therefore crush skyscrapers simply by hovering over them. "Of course," quips Krauss, "this wouldn't have made for spectacular previews of coming attractions." Whether you're a Trekkie, an X-phile, or a serious student of physics, you'll like this book.

From Kirkus Reviews
Many scientists say that reading science fiction inspired them to launch their careers. Krauss concludes: Why not draw on sci-fi lore, exploits, and tales to teach hard science? The author (Physics and Astronomy/Case Western Reserve Univ.) scored a bestseller with his previous book, The Physics of Star Trek (1995). Now he expands his scope to address other sci-fi hits, ranging from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey to TV's The X-Files. He also scrutinizes such newsworthy events as the chess match between world champion Gary Kasparov and an IBM computer. Krauss begins by examining the alien attack on Earth that was portrayed in the movie Independence Day. He uses basic Newtonian physics to show that the gravitational effects of the huge arriving alien ships would have caused floods and earthquakes sufficient to destroy our civilization before the invaders had even fired a shot. Next, the author assesses the supposed flight characteristics of UFOs, depicted as stopping on a dime and making sudden sharp turns at utterly unbelievable speeds. Krauss calculates that these maneuvers would create inertial G-forces greater than a close-range nuclear explosion; neither the pilots nor any conceivable construction material could withstand them. Another chapter examines the cost of mounting an interstellar expedition, a journey that would require many decades to complete and cost more than the moon. Later chapters apply the principle of general relativity to star travel, explore computer consciousness, and forecast the end of the world. The book concludes by affirming the author's belief that the universe is a place of boundless potential--and that we must fathom it. Perhaps because Krauss shares the public's affection for the pop sources he consults, his book will entertain and instruct general readers without insulting the scientifically literate.

Description:
A nationally known astrologer explores the connection between spiritual emergencies at age 30, 40, and 50 and key astrological passages of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron.

* Provides techniques for directing the kundalini energy released during planetary passages for optimal personal and psychic development.

* Includes charts for birth years starting in 1930 so that readers can determine the timing of their planetary passages.

* By Barbara Hand Clow, author of the bestselling Pleiadian Agenda (60,000 copies sold).

Kundalini--the energy of eros that lies at the base of the spine--can be overwhelming once activated. Times of activation coincide with the key astrological passages of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron in one's birth chart and are often experienced as periods of spiritual emergency, confusion, and imbalance.

In Liquid Light of Sex, Barbara Hand Clow opens up new dimensions for understanding what occurs during these key life passages, which most of us experience three times in our lives. In the author's words, "we form at age 30, we transform at age 40, and we transmute at age 50." Focusing on the transformation at age 40--the time of imbalance and spiritual confusion often referred to as the "midlife crisis"--she explores how kundalini energy, the liquid light of sex, can be creatively channeled by unblocking the chakras. Offering effective methods for achieving physical, emotional, and spiritual growth during this important life passage, Liquid Light of Sex presents a roadmap for using celestial cycles to navigate positively and productively in times of great life change.

Secrets of Attacking Chess: Understanding When,Where and How to Attack

Secrets of Attacking Chess: Understanding When,Where and How to Attack
Author(s): Mihail Marin
Publisher: Gambit Publications
Pages : 191
Format : PDF
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 190460030
Size : 18.28 MB

Description:
This book is about "the very special moment of the game when, as if by magic, an attack becomes possible." I have this vision of Marin as an elderly Klingon, waving his flask of blood wine and regaling you with the most fantastic stories! It's like he's sitting in front of you with a chess board, showing you everything, pausing for effect, slamming down a devastating move then demonstrating why there is no good reply to it. He's with you, he's involved, he's enthusiastic, passionate. The text is alive. It's more like reading a novel than a chess book! These must be his own words; no translator is mentioned. He tells you what he thinks are the psychological processes in the minds of top players - then backs it up by demonstrating exactly the same human foibles in his own games - not something he could do if he were not a strong GM! This is a benefit of having a strong GM as an author - not only do you get absolutely accurate analysis, but also the insight into how much of it was seen at the board. Frighteningly large amounts! Great vaulted cathedrals of variations, stained glass and all. OK there's lots of analysis, but don't be scared by the look of the pages. Imagine the guy in front of you, and it's like he's telling you stories of dragon-slaying, and the sequences of moves are the lurid details of how he chased it behind a rock and was nearly eaten when it sprang out over the top. The lines of analysis are as necessary and as amazing as the moves that actually happened in the games. This is a book to take your time over and savour.

The Mind at Night: The New Science of How and Why We Dream

The Mind at Night: The New Science of How and Why We Dream

Publisher: Basic Books

Pages : 234
Format : PDF
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 0465070698
ISBN-13 : 9780465070695
Size : 11.73 MB

Description:
This exceptionally lucid and engaging work of science writing explicates breakthroughs in the study of the dreaming mind from the 1950s to the present day. Rock, an award-winning medical and science reporter, proves a crisp and thorough storyteller as she portrays the professional tensions among scientific innovators and delineates theoretical controversies (in which the legacy of Freud looms large). She frequently cites interviews with neuroscientists and psychologists, bringing out the drama of their intellectual struggles. Opening with the discovery of the REM phase of sleep by a lowly University of Chicago graduate student, Rock charts the subsequent explosion in dream research: investigations into the roles of different parts of the brain in dreaming; theories of animal dreaming and the evolutionary history of dreaming; the nature of memory; and the neurological relationships among dreaming, mental illness and consciousness itself. Examples of dreams are kept to a relevant minimum, but many statistics of interest are reported. In Rock's concluding chapters, a seamlessly narrated account of a period of sustained scientific focus on the dreaming mind eases into a broader discussion of the function of dreaming in the context of contemporary scientific findings and beliefs. Here Rock discourages simplistic dream-symbol decoding in favor of a more complex approach enlightened by present-day theories.

The Naked Woman: A Study of the Female Body

The Naked Woman: A Study of the Female Body

Format : PDF
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 0312338538
ISBN-13 : 978-0312338534
Size : 28.98 MB

Description:
Undeniably the quintessential observer of the human condition, best-selling Morris casts his discerning eye upon the feminine form in this top-to-toe tour of all things female in a continuation of the inquiry he began with the seminal The Naked Ape (1967). Scrutinizing everything from hair to feet, Morris explores the evolutionary, cultural, and biological traits and tendencies that have caused woman to become the creature she is today. Morris is positively giddy with admiration for his subject, stating that the human female is "far more advanced" than her male counterpart, the result of evolutionary developments that make her the "most remarkable organism" on the planet. And yet, Morris avers, woman has not come far enough--at least in some global cultures, where male domination runs counter to human biological imperative. Thus, each chapter, which correlates to body parts as subtle as the brow and as expected as the breasts, examines how each characteristic has been shaped by social authority. Always entertaining, Morris takes a complex subject and cogently dissects it in fine detail for a critically enlightening experience.

Mind Hacks: Tips & Tricks for Using Your Brain

Mind Hacks: Tips & Tricks for Using Your Brain
Author(s): Tom Stafford, Matt Webb
Publisher: O'Reilly Media
Date : 2004
Pages : 394
Format : CHM
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 0596007795
ISBN-13 : 9780596007799
Size : 3.41 MB

Description:
The brain is a fearsomely complex information-processing environment--one that often eludes our ability to understand it. At any given time, the brain is collecting, filtering, and analyzing information and, in response, performing countless intricate processes, some of which are automatic, some voluntary, some conscious, and some unconscious.

Cognitive neuroscience is one of the ways we have to understand the workings of our minds. It's the study of the brain biology behind our mental functions: a collection of methods--like brain scanning and computational modeling--combined with a way of looking at psychological phenomena and discovering where, why, and how the brain makes them happen.

Want to know more? "Mind Hacks" is a collection of probes into the moment-by-moment works of the brain. Using cognitive neuroscience, these experiments, tricks, and tips related to vision, motor skills, attention, cognition, subliminal perception, and more throw light on how the human brain works. Each hack examines specific operations of the brain. By seeing how the brain responds, we pick up clues about the architecture and design of the brain, learning a little bit more about how the brain is put together.

"Mind Hacks" begins your exploration of the mind with a look inside the brain itself, using hacks such as "Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Turn On and Off Bits of the Brain" and "Tour the Cortex and the Four Lobes."

Also among the 100 hacks in this book, you'll find:

* Release Eye Fixations for Faster Reactions

* See Movement When All is Still

* Feel the Presence and Loss of Attention

* Detect Sounds on the Margins of Certainty

* Mold Your Body Schema

* Test YourHandedness

* See a Person in Moving Lights

* Make Events Understandable as Cause-and-Effect

* Boost Memory by Using Context

* Understand Detail and the Limits of Attention

Steven Johnson, author of "Mind Wide Open" writes in his foreword to the book, "These hacks amaze because they reveal the brain's hidden logic; they shed light on the cheats and shortcuts and latent assumptions our brains make about the world." If you want to know more about what's going on in your head, then "Mind Hacks" is the key--let yourself play with the interface between you and the world.
