Somewhere in the Middle of the Story...

"What the f*%# am I doing here?"

These words floated in my mind as I sat in the semi dark dressing room, waiting for her to show up. I knew I was not supposed to be there. I had a vague idea of what she might have to say to me so urgently but she had no inkling that I was a Trojan. And that I was between a rock and an inviting trap. Although I may have redesigned my fantasies, inadvertently of course….. Clearly I was thinking up a lot of crap.*

This dressing room was at the farthest corner of the auditorium, secluded from other rooms more frequented by others. She chose it, I reasoned, because;*
- Becoz she wanted to talk to me alone;*
- Becoz she didn't want others to know that she wanted to talk to me alone;*
- Becoz she has so many admirers, its high chance she won't be left alone;*
- Or maybe becoz .... she finds me irresistibly charming and wants to make out with me. Just juggling probabilities. *

They say, to understand any good screw-up you have to be in one. Mine had its birth … let me see… about three weeks ago. Imagine how quickly life can turn the tables. So here's what should have never happened in the first place (I sounded like a fart, didn’t I??) and if given a 2nd chance... well I might end up repeating it. Honestly I don’t have what you would call ‘an active part’ in this melodrama. You’ll see. Just keep reading…... while I wait for her to arrive….

Histories

I was 17 and she was 18. We went to the same school and we were only a class away from each other, i.e. she was in XIIth and I was in XIth. And she also happened to be the most happening girl in school, the queen bee of a busy hive, all of which made her a distant goddess to me and also my senior. I had admired her many a times as one would admire Katrina Kaif, charming and out of reach. I was fairly certain she was aware of my existence; as another junior of her school. Our trajectories were separate and we lived inside our own cocoon, oblivious of the other.*

* *Apparently I was a bright kid, with average looks, relatively harmless, not that much into sports, a kite enthusiast and literature lover. Now let me tell you about the two friends I had.

* Santanu was a picture of contradiction; he bent his parents into buying him a four gear bicycle, but won’t ride it because it may get damaged or stolen; he would memorise every school text even before it was covered but had a hard time during exams. And he was in love with a cutie of our class named Sagarika, but he hadn’t spoken to her about it even though he was capable of yapping all day.

* Rishabh was a senior actually. He had to drop a year in IXth due to ill health and that seemed to have left a mark on his physique as well as psyche. His body was bony, bereft of fat and quite tall for his age which made him look thinner than he actually was. He had a subdued complexion like me and was the quietest among us.*

It was 5th of September and a slow day at school. We were desperately waiting for the Pujas, due within a month. At lunch break, we heard that the next two periods were free as the teacher had come down with flu. Being the second senior most lot in school, there were certain privileges like lack of supervision. So, as soon as the news broke, the entire class got scattered all around the campus. Me, Rishabh & Santanu decided to check out the roof, it being restricted and all.
The sun wasn’t so rude that day and we were able to stand in the open. Our school was five stored and U-shaped. We were on the central portion, overlooking the inside of the U. From where we stood, we could see the entire inner portion of the school. There were a lot of boys and girls from our class who had coupled and parked themselves at various locations on the ground, cleverly guarded from inquisitive eyes at their level or even from some of the floors above, but plainly visible to us. A slight chuckle escaped my lips as I thought of these lucky chaps who could get a girl for themselves. Santanu was gawking at them like a monkey. A few of them might have noticed us for the girls started to freak out, so I pulled Santanu back from the parapet.
“Kya yaar? Won’t even let me have some eye candy. If we can’t get some for ourselves, then at least we could look at our friends having fun, may be even learn a thing or two.” Santanu lamented as he was trying to wriggle free from my grip and resume his peeping tom activities.
“Yah, like you would invite me or Rishabh for a sneak peak when you have your cosy time with Sagarika, you pervert. Now stop acting and come here.” I barked. Rishabh, being the tallest could easily see most of the things downstairs. Suddenly his eyes caught something and his face darkened. He pulled back quickly and flopped down on the ground, tagging Santanu along. Santanu was not prepared for this and he fell head long on the roof surface.
“Why the f*&% did you do that?” he yelled. Even I was surprised at this sudden reaction of Rishabh.
“Shut up you moron.” Rishabh chided. “And why are you so eager to look at successful pairs when you don’t even have the balls to go after one girl.”
“Yeah, like you have fared any better. I know all about your love pangs. So don’t you lecture me, or I’ll babble all your exploits to ooooaaaaa…aaahhh….. leeeave mmee…what the…okk….okkay, I won’t say a thing,” Rishabh let go of Santanu’s neck he had grabbed two seconds ago and poor soul cowered to my corner.
"How come I don't know anything about your love story. Who’s the girl?" I asked. This was really news to me. Rishabh always seemed like a loner who never took any interest in the opposite sex and I was finding hard to imagine him sitting like those love birds below with a girl.
"Arrey, it’s nothing like that. This idiot is just cooking things up." He tried to evade, but his cheeks seemed to have changed colour.
"Yeah sure. I can see that from your face. So who's this damsel? Do I know her? Is she from our class or your neighborhood?"
"Neither" quipped Santanu and got rewarded with a kick from Rishabh.
"Hmm, so Rishabh does have a girl. I seriously cannot believe you haven’t told me anything about this before. And I thought I was your best friend. Now I will forever have my doubts." I faked an impressive sulk, acting all hurt and what not. It worked pretty fast as Rishabh laid down his weapons at once. "Hey man, com'on. Okay I'll tell you everything. From the very beginning. There really isn’t much to it."
“Yeah, we’ll see about that. Now start talking.” I said.

The couple, who got married in 1998 and jointly owned a flat, were staying in separate rooms in Mittal Ocean View on Juhu Tara Road in suburban Santacruz as they were fighting a divorce case in a family court. The wife had alleged offences against her artist husband Chintan Upadhyay under Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act for painting her in the buff.
Acting on her complaint, the Bandra Magistrate had issued process on January 8 against Upadhyay, who challenged the order in the high court. The high court did not agree with Upadhyay that the complaint disclosed no offence punishable under the provisions of Indian Penal Code or Indecent Representation of Women's Act or that the continuation of proceedings in pursuance thereof is an abuse of the process of law.

"Once the complaint discloses offence, then it can not be thrown out at the threshold as prayed by the petitioner and particularly on the ground of his absolute right of freedom of speech and expression," observed Justice SC Dharmadhikari. It (the complaint) can not be thrown out on the ground that the work is confined and restricted in private area or private room as well, the Judge further said.

"Once, the areas in the flat or the rooms are not demarcated, the flat is not divided, the petitioner ordinarily resides at Delhi but he and (his) wife are only occupying different rooms, then, it can not be held that the petitioner exercised his right to paint in his own bedroom in furtherance of his right to privacy and life and liberty guaranteed by the Constitution," Justice Dharmadhikari observed.
The allegations clearly point out that the room which is not frequently used and occupied by the petitioner is open to servants and driver and the paintings can be seen by them as also the wife. Hence, it would not be proper to quash the complaint, the judge noted while dismissing the petition.

A bench of Justices B S Chauhan and F M I Kalifulla said even if the report of the two-finger test is affirmative, it cannot give rise to presumption of consent on part of a rape victim.

"Undoubtedly, the two-finger test and its interpretation violates the right of rape survivors to privacy, physical and mental integrity and dignity. Thus, this test, even if the report is affirmative, cannot ipso facto, be given rise to presumption of consent," the bench said.

The two-finger test entails medical inspection of the female hymen.

Referring to various international covenants, the judges said rape survivors are entitled to legal recourse that does not violate their physical or mental integrity and dignity.

"Medical procedures should not be carried out in a manner that constitutes cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and health should be of paramount consideration while dealing with gender-based violence.

"The state is under an obligation to make such services available to survivors of sexual violence. Proper measures should be taken to ensure their safety and there should be no arbitrary or unlawful interference with her privacy," the bench said.

Keeping in mind the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights 1966 and the UN Declaration of Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power 1985, the apex court said, rape survivors are entitled to legal recourse that does not re-traumatise them or violate their physical or mental integrity and dignity.

"They are also entitled to medical procedures conducted in a manner that respects their right to consent," it said.

The 21-year-old man from Illinois was honeymooning in Florida last week, when he decided to leave his wife at the hotel and solicit a prostitute.

Unfortunately for him, the woman turned out to be an undercover cop and he was one of 92 nabbed in a sting operation conducted by Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Ahmed brilliantly used Backpage.com to solicit the prostitute and landed himself in a jail cell, joining the others who were part of the four-day sting operation.

When Ahmed didn’t returned to his room at the Omni Hotel in Champions Gate, his new wife became increasingly worried, until she called called the sheriff’s office to report him missing.
